Latest Wii Update : Some new features, some breakage.

August 10th, 2007 by perry

Nintendo recently pushed out a Wii firmware update (version 3.0).

Some things they added:

  • Wii Shop improvments (enhanced search in the Virtual Console shop).
  • Wii Message Board Improvments (you can now rearrange friends in the address book, among other tweaks).
  • A digital clock on the main Wii channel interface.
  • Weather and News update in the channel thumbnails.
  • Preliminary support for USB keyboards in the Wii Message Board and Shop (not the Internet Channel though .. doh !).

Some things they broke:

(there is a concise list of all new ‘features’ discovered here)
Sure, things like the Datel products are unsupported third party enhancements and Nintendo has no obligation to make their updates compatible with them … however these ‘breakages’ appear to be a deliberate move by Nintendo to try and cripple modchips which use update discs (such as the WiiKey). Either way, if Nintendo keeps up these kinds of shenadigans it will certainly impact on Wii sales in the long term. For those of us who have already bought a Wii in good faith to use with these third-party enhancements … too bad … just think carefully about the next console you buy ….
