It’s taken a while, but YouTube has finally released a Wii (and PS3, etc) optimized interface to their site, which they call “YouTube TV“.

The new YouTube TV interface plays a similar role to sites like moowee.tv, which has been providing a slick Internet Channel Wii-optimised frontend to YouTube (and other video sites) from essentially day one.

I really like this new offering from YouTube; it feels a bit simpler and more reliable than moowee.tv, and switching to fullscreen mode is seemless. It’s quite watchable for some of the higher quality videos. I can see YouTube TV becoming my preferred option for the odd occasion when I want to veg-out on the couch and watch some stupid viral videos.

If you want to check it out without firing up your Wii, you can install the Switch User Agent Add-on for Firefox, and add the User-Agent “Opera/9.00 (Nintendo Wii; U; ; 1038-58; Wii Shop Channel/1.0; en)”. Go to YouTube TV, and you will see the Wii optimized interface in all it’s glory. For the definitive experience, check it out on your Wii.

This weeks releases at the Australian Virtual Console shop … hot on the heels of Super Turrican comes Mega Turrican, originally released on the Sega Megadrive (for the religious types, the Genesis).

There’s something about this game that makes it look really satisfying and playable. I think it’s actually the shooting sound that does it for me. It’s going to be a tough choice deciding between a purchase of Mega Turrican or Super Turrican.

Here’s some Wikipedia-derived trivia: Mega Turrican is actually a port of the Amiga version of Turrican 3. Since it’s “Good Friday” today, here are some Mega Turrican Easter Eggs (well, more like cheats, but it’s the best I could come up with).

Just one release in the Australian Wii Shop this week … the cutesy farming simulation Harvest Moon, originally on Super Nintendo.

Harvest Moon (SNES)

(this video is of an emulated version, not on the original SNES or Virtual Console … sorry, real Harvest Moon videos were as hard to find as the original cartridge. Enjoy the entertaining IRC-style chat by the players, as subtitles).

The English version of Harvest Moon for SNES is known to be extremely rare, so unlike many Virtual Console games, you probably won’t find the cartridge cheaper on Ebay. In this case 800 points (~AUD$12) is a bargain. It’s nice to see rarities like this being released, particularly when they are something fun and unusual like Harvest Moon … it might be worth picking up in preparation for the Wii version of Harvest Moon: Tree of Peace that is slated for release sometime early this year.
